How do those in other countries, with what we would consider nothing materially, worship God with a grateful, thankful heart? I believe they have internalized the truth that God is worthy to be praised whether they can see how they are being blessed or not. They have internalized the truth that God is good even when life is hard and tragedy strikes. I believe too many of us unknowingly want to serve a vending machine God. With a real vending machine we spend some time reading the instructions, we give some money, push some buttons and get what we want. With a vending machine God we want to read the instructions, give some money, push some buttons and get what we want. The bible is not an instruction manual, our money does not guarantee we get what we want and God has no buttons to push. God is not a big vending machine in the sky. No one does this conscientiously. But, sub-conscientiously we do it all too often. This mind-set is exposed when we think our prayers aren't being answered or when tragedy happens. If you have this mind-set you can find yourself getting angry with God in a most disrespectful way or losing your faith in the goodness and faithfulness of God.
